How to choose your first DJ controller

Every week someone walks into the studio at Plot 1 Bukoto Street holding a controller they bought online, asking why it does not feel like the one they saw in a video. Usually the answer is the same — they bought for the spec sheet instead of for the way they want to play.

Start with the jog wheels. If you intend to scratch or do anything hands-on, wheel size and feel matter more than the number of pads. A small, light wheel will fight you for years. Spend your money there first.

Then look at the mixer section. Two channels is enough to learn on and enough for most club work. Four channels only earns its price once you are genuinely layering more than two sources, and most people never get there.

Ignore the effects count. Every controller ships with more effects than you will ever use well, and a set carried by effects is a set that was not mixed properly underneath.

Finally — and this is the part nobody says — budget for stands, cables and a case. A controller sitting on a wobbly table with a borrowed cable will sound and feel worse than a cheaper setup that is properly rigged.
